Morning Prayer — First Lesson

Sirach 14

Blessed is the man that has not slipped with his mouth, And is not pricked with sorrow for sins. Blessed is he whose soul does not condemn him, And who is not fallen from his hope. Riches are not comely for a niggard; And what should an envious man do with money? He that gathers by taking from his own soul gathers for others; And others will revel in his goods. He that is evil to himself, to whom will he be good? And he will not rejoice in his possessions. There is none more evil than he that envies himself; And this is a recompense of his wickedness. Even if he does good, he does it in forgetfulness; And at the last he shows forth his wickedness. Evil is he that envies with his eye, Turning away the face, and despising the souls of men. A covetous man’s eye is not satisfied with his portion; And wicked injustice dries up his soul. An evil eye is grudging of bread, And he is miserly at his table My son, according as you have, do well to yourself, And bring offerings to the Lord worthily. Remember that death will not wait, And that the covenant of the grave is not showed to you. Do well to your friend before you die; And according to your ability stretch out your hand and give to him. Defraud not yourself of a good day; And don’t let the portion of a good desire pass you by. Shall you not leave your labors to another? And your toils to be divided by lot? Give, and take, and decieve your soul; For there is no seeking of luxury in the grave. All flesh waxes old as a garment; For the covenant from the beginning is, You shall die the death. As of the leaves flourishing on a thick tree, Some it sheds, and some it makes to grow; So also of the generations of flesh and blood, One comes to an end, and another is born. Every work rots and falls away, And the worker thereof shall depart with it. Blessed is the man that shall meditate in wisdom, And that shall discourse by his understanding. He that considers her ways in his heart Shall also have knowledge in her secrets. Go forth after her as one that tracketh, And lie in wait in her ways. He that pries in at her windows Shall also hearken at her doors. He that lodges close to her house Shall also fasten a nail in her walls. He shall pitch his tent near at hand to her, And will lodge in a lodging where good things are. He will set his children under her shelter, And will rest under her branches. By her he will be covered from heat, And will lodge in her glory.

Morning Prayer — Second Lesson

Luke 17

He said to the disciples, “It is impossible that no occasions of stumbling should come, but woe to him through whom they come! It would be better for him if a millstone were hung around his neck, and he were thrown into the sea, rather than that he should cause one of these little ones to stumble. Be careful. If your brother sins against you, rebuke him. If he repents, forgive him. If he sins against you seven times in the day, and seven times returns, saying, ‘I repent,’ you shall forgive him.” The apostles said to the Lord, “Increase our faith.” The Lord said, “If you had faith like a grain of mustard seed, you would tell this sycamore tree, ‘Be uprooted, and be planted in the sea,’ and it would obey you. But who is there among you, having a servant plowing or keeping sheep, that will say when he comes in from the field, ‘Come immediately and sit down at the table,’ and will not rather tell him, ‘Prepare my supper, clothe yourself properly, and serve me, while I eat and drink. Afterward you shall eat and drink’? Does he thank that servant because he did the things that were commanded? I think not. Even so you also, when you have done all the things that are commanded you, say, ‘We are unworthy servants. We have done our duty.’ ” As he was on his way to Jerusalem, he was passing along the borders of Samaria and Galilee. As he entered into a certain village, ten men who were lepers met him, who stood at a distance. They lifted up their voices, saying, “Jesus, Master, have mercy on us!” When he saw them, he said to them, “Go and show yourselves to the priests.” As they went, they were cleansed. One of them, when he saw that he was healed, turned back, glorifying God with a loud voice. He fell on his face at Jesus’ feet, giving him thanks; and he was a Samaritan. Jesus answered, “Weren’t the ten cleansed? But where are the nine? Were there none found who returned to give glory to God, except this foreigner?” Then he said to him, “Get up, and go your way. Your faith has healed you.” Being asked by the Pharisees when God’s Kingdom would come, he answered them, “God’s Kingdom doesn’t come with observation; neither will they say, ‘Look, here!’ or, ‘Look, there!’ for behold, God’s Kingdom is within you.” He said to the disciples, “The days will come when you will desire to see one of the days of the Son of Man, and you will not see it. They will tell you, ‘Look, here!’ or ‘Look, there!’ Don’t go away or follow after them, for as the lightning, when it flashes out of one part under the sky, shines to another part under the sky; so will the Son of Man be in his day. But first, he must suffer many things and be rejected by this generation. As it was in the days of Noah, even so will it be also in the days of the Son of Man. They ate, they drank, they married, and they were given in marriage until the day that Noah entered into the ship, and the flood came and destroyed them all. Likewise, even as it was in the days of Lot: they ate, they drank, they bought, they sold, they planted, they built; but in the day that Lot went out from Sodom, it rained fire and sulfur from the sky and destroyed them all. It will be the same way in the day that the Son of Man is revealed. In that day, he who will be on the housetop and his goods in the house, let him not go down to take them away. Let him who is in the field likewise not turn back. Remember Lot’s wife! Whoever seeks to save his life loses it, but whoever loses his life preserves it. I tell you, in that night there will be two people in one bed. One will be taken and the other will be left. There will be two grinding grain together. One will be taken and the other will be left.” They, answering, asked him, “Where, Lord?” He said to them, “Where the body is, there the vultures will also be gathered together.”

Evening Prayer — First Lesson

Sirach 15

He that fears the Lord will do this; And he that has possession of the law will obtain her. And as a mother shall she meet him, And receive him as a wife married in her virginity. With bread of understanding will she feed him, And give him water of wisdom to drink. He will be stayed upon her, and will not be moved; And will rely upon her, and will not be confounded. And she will exalt him above his neighbors; And in the midst of the congregation will she open his mouth. He will inherit joy, and a crown of gladness, And an everlasting name. Foolish men will not obtain her; And sinners will not see her. She is far from pride; And liars will not remember her. Praise is not comely in the mouth of a sinner; For it was not sent him from the Lord. For praise will be spoken in wisdom; And the Lord will prosper it. Say not you, It is through the Lord that I fell away; For you shall not do the things that he hates. Say not you, It is he that caused me to err; For he has no need of a sinful man. The Lord hates every abomination; And those who fear him love it not. He himself made man from the beginning, And left him in the hand of his own counsel. If you will, you shall keep the commandments; And to perform faithfulness is of your own good pleasure. He has set fire and water before you: You will stretch forth your hand to whichever you will. Before man is life and death; And whichever he likes, it shall be given him. For great is the wisdom of the Lord: He is mighty in power, and sees all things; And his eyes are upon those who fear him; And he will take knowledge of every work of man. He has not commanded any man to be ungodly; And he has not given any man licence to sin.

Evening Prayer — Second Lesson

Colossians 1

Paul, an apostle of Christ Jesus through the will of God, and Timothy our brother, to the saints and faithful brothers in Christ at Colossae: Grace to you and peace from God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ. We give thanks to God the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, praying always for you, having heard of your faith in Christ Jesus and of the love which you have toward all the saints, because of the hope which is laid up for you in the heavens, of which you heard before in the word of the truth of the Good News which has come to you, even as it is in all the world and is bearing fruit and growing, as it does in you also, since the day you heard and knew the grace of God in truth, even as you learned of Epaphras our beloved fellow servant, who is a faithful servant of Christ on your behalf, who also declared to us your love in the Spirit. For this cause, we also, since the day we heard this, don’t cease praying and making requests for you, that you may be filled with the knowledge of his will in all spiritual wisdom and understanding, that you may walk worthily of the Lord, to please him in all respects, bearing fruit in every good work and increasing in the knowledge of God, strengthened with all power, according to the might of his glory, for all endurance and perseverance with joy, giving thanks to the Father, who made us fit to be partakers of the inheritance of the saints in light, who delivered us out of the power of darkness, and translated us into the Kingdom of the Son of his love, in whom we have our redemption, the forgiveness of our sins. He is the image of the invisible God, the firstborn of all creation. For by him all things were created in the heavens and on the earth, visible things and invisible things, whether thrones or dominions or principalities or powers. All things have been created through him and for him. He is before all things, and in him all things are held together. He is the head of the body, the assembly, who is the beginning, the firstborn from the dead, that in all things he might have the preeminence. For all the fullness was pleased to dwell in him, and through him to reconcile all things to himself by him, whether things on the earth or things in the heavens, having made peace through the blood of his cross. You, being in past times alienated and enemies in your mind in your evil deeds, yet now he has reconciled in the body of his flesh through death, to present you holy and without defect and blameless before him, if it is so that you continue in the faith, grounded and steadfast, and not moved away from the hope of the Good News which you heard, which is being proclaimed in all creation under heaven, of which I, Paul, was made a servant. Now I rejoice in my sufferings for your sake, and fill up on my part that which is lacking of the afflictions of Christ in my flesh for his body’s sake, which is the assembly, of which I was made a servant according to the stewardship of God which was given me toward you to fulfill the word of God, the mystery which has been hidden for ages and generations. But now it has been revealed to his saints, to whom God was pleased to make known what are the riches of the glory of this mystery among the Gentiles, which is Christ in you, the hope of glory. We proclaim him, admonishing every man and teaching every man in all wisdom, that we may present every man perfect in Christ Jesus; for which I also labor, striving according to his working, which works in me mightily.
