When those who were in the tents heard, they were amazed at what happened. Trembling and fear fell upon them, and no man dared stay any more in the sight of his neighbor, but rushing out with one accord, they fled into every way of the plain and of the hill country. Those who had encamped in the hill country round about Bethulia fled away. And then the children of Israel, every one who was a warrior among them, rushed out upon them. Ozias sent to Betomasthaim, Bebai, Chobai, and Chola, and to every coast of Israel, to tell about the things that had been accomplished, and that all should rush upon their enemies to destroy them. But wnen the children of Israel heard, they all fell upon them with one accord, and struck them to Chobai. Yes, and in like manner also they of Jerusalem and of all the hill country came (for men had told them about what happened in their enemies’ camp), and those who were in Gilead and in Galilee fell upon their flank with a great slaughter, until they were past Damascus and its borders. The rest of the people who lived at Bethulia fell upon the camp of Asshur, and plundered them, and were enriched exceedingly. The children of Israel returned from the slaughter, and got possession of that which remained. The villages and the cities that were in the hill country and in the plain country, took many spoils; for there was an exceedingly great supply. Joakim the high priest, and the elders of the children of Israel whe lived in Jerusalem, came to see the good things which the Lord had showed to Israel, and to see Judith, and to salute her. When they came to her, they all blessed her with one accord, and said to her, “You are the exaltation of Jerusalem! You are the great glory of Israel! You are the great rejoicing of our race! You have done all these things by your hand. You have done with Israel the things that are good, and God is pleased with it. Blessed be you with the Almighty Lord for evermore.” And all the people said, “Amen!” And the people plundered the camp for the space of thirty days: and they gave Holofernes’ tent to Judith, along with all his silver cups, his beds, his bowls, and all his furniture. She took them, and placed them on her mule, and prepared her wagons, and heaped them on it. And all the women of Israel ran together to see her; and they blessed her, and made a dance among them for her. She took branches in her hand, and distributed them to the women who were with her. The they made themselves garlands of olive, she and those who were with her, and she went before all the people in the dance, leading all the women. All the men of Israel followed in their armor with garlands, and with songs in their mouths.

Dimineaţa, preoţii cei mai de seamă au făcut îndată sfat cu bătrînii, cărturarii şi tot Soborul. Dupăce au legat pe Isus, L-au dus şi L-au dat în mînile lui Pilat. Pilat L -a întrebat: ,,Eşti Tu Împăratul Iudeilor?`` ,,Da, sînt``, i -a răspuns Isus. Preoţii cei mai de seamă Îl învinuiau de multe lucruri. Pilat L -a întrebat din nou: ,,Nu răspunzi nimic? Uite de cîte lucruri Te învinuiesc ei!`` Isus n'a mai dat nici un răspuns, lucru care a mirat pe Pilat. La fiecare praznic al Paştelor, Pilat le slobozea un întemniţat, pe care -l cereau ei. În temniţă era unul numit Baraba, închis împreună cu tovarăşii lui, din pricina unui omor, pe care -l săvîrşiseră într'o răscoală. Norodul s'a suit, şi a început să ceară lui Pilat să le dea ce avea obicei să le dea totdeauna. Pilat le -a răspuns: ,,Voiţi să vă slobozesc pe Împăratul Iudeilor?`` Căci pricepuse că preoţii cei mai de seamă din pizmă Îl dăduseră în mîna lui. Dar preoţii cei mai de seamă au aţîţat norodul să ceară lui Pilat să le slobozească mai bine pe Baraba. Pilat a luat din nou cuvîntul, şi le -a zis: ,,Dar ce voiţi să fac cu Acela, pe care -L numiţi Împăratul Iudeilor?`` Ei au strigat din nou: ,,Răstigneşte -L!`` ,,Dar ce rău a făcut?`` le -a zis Pilat. Însă ei au început să strige şi mai tare: ,,Răstigneşte -L!`` Pilat a vrut să facă pe placul norodului, şi le -a slobozit pe Baraba; iar pe Isus, dupăce a pus să -L bată cu nuiele, L -a dat să fie răstignit. Ostaşii au adus pe Isus în curte, adică în palat, şi au adunat toată ceata ostaşilor. L-au îmbrăcat într'o haină de purpură, au împletit o cunună de spini, şi I-au pus -o pe cap. Apoi au început să -I ureze, şi să zică: ,,Plecăciune, Împăratul Iudeilor!`` Şi -L loveau în cap cu o trestie, Îl scuipau, îngenuncheau şi I se închinau. Dupăce şi-au bătut astfel joc de El, L-au desbrăcat de haina de purpură, L-au îmbrăcat în hainele Lui, şi L-au dus să -L răstignească. Au silit să ducă crucea lui Isus pe un trecător, care se întorcea dela cîmp, numit Simon din Cirena, tatăl lui Alexandru şi al lui Ruf. Şi au adus pe Isus la locul numit Golgota, care, tîlmăcit, însemnează: ,,Locul căpăţînii.`` I-au dat să bea vin amestecat cu smirnă, dar El nu l -a luat. Dupăce L-au răstignit, I-au împărţit hainele între ei, trăgînd la sorţi, ca să ştie ce să ia fiecare. Cînd L-au răstignit, era ceasul al treilea. Deasupra Lui era scrisă vina Lui: ,,Împăratul Iudeilor.`` Împreună cu El au răstignit doi tîlhari, unul la dreapta şi altul la stînga Lui. Astfel s'a împlinit Scriptura, care zice: ,,A fost pus în numărul celor fărădelege.`` Trecătorii îşi băteau joc de El, dădeau din cap, şi ziceau: ,,Uă! Tu, care strici Templul, şi -l zideşti la loc în trei zile, mîntuieşte-Te pe Tine însuţi, şi pogoară-Te de pe cruce!`` Tot astfel şi preoţii cei mai de seamă, împreună cu cărturarii îşi băteau joc de El între ei, şi ziceau: ,,Pe alţii i -a mîntuit, şi pe Sine însuş nu Se poate mîntui! Hristosul, Împăratul lui Israel, să Se pogoare acum de pe cruce, ca să vedem şi să credem!`` Cei răstigniţi împreună cu El, deasemenea îşi băteau joc de El. La ceasul al şaselea, s'a făcut întunerec peste toată ţara, pînă la ceasul al nouălea. Şi în ceasul al nouălea, Isus a strigat cu glas tare: ,,Eloi, Eloi, lama sabactani`` care, tîlmăcit, înseamnă: ,,Dumnezeul Meu, Dumnezeul Meu, pentruce M'ai părăsit?`` Unii din cei ce stăteau acolo, cînd L-au auzit, ziceau: ,,Iată, cheamă pe Ilie!`` Şi unul din ei a alergat de a umplut un burete cu oţet, l -a pus într'o trestie, şi I -a dat să bea, zicînd: ,,Lăsaţi să vedem dacă va veni Ilie să -L pogoare de pe cruce!`` Dar Isus a scos un strigăt tare, şi Şi -a dat duhul. Perdeaua dinlăuntrul Templului s'a rupt în două de sus pînă jos. Sutaşul, care sta în faţa lui Isus, cînd a văzut că Şi -a dat astfel duhul, a zis: ,,Cu adevărat, omul acesta era Fiul lui Dumnezeu!`` Acolo erau şi nişte femei, cari priveau de departe. Printre ele erau Maria Magdalina, Maria, mama lui Iacov cel mic şi a lui Iose, şi Salome, cari, pe cînd era El în Galilea, mergeau după El şi -I slujeau; şi multe alte femei, cari se suiseră împreună cu El în Ierusalim. Cînd s'a înserat-fiindcă era ziua Pregătirii, adică, ziua dinaintea Sabatului. - a venit Iosif din Arimatea, un sfetnic cu vază al soborului, care şi el aştepta Împărăţia lui Dumnezeu. El a îndrăznit să se ducă la Pilat ca să ceară trupul lui Isus. Pilat s'a mirat că murise aşa de curînd; a chemat pe sutaş, şi l -a întrebat dacă a murit de mult. După ce s'a încredinţat de la sutaş că a murit, a dăruit lui Iosif trupul. Şi Iosif a cumpărat o pînză subţire de in, a dat jos pe Isus de pe cruce, L -a înfăşurat în pînza de in, şi L -a pus într-un mormînt săpat în stîncă. Apoi a prăvălit o piatră la uşa mormîntului. Maria Magdalina şi Maria, mama lui Iose, se uitau unde -L puneau.

And Judith began to sing this song of thanksgiving in all Israel, and all the people sang with loud voices this song of praise. Judith said, “Begin a song to my God with timbrels. Sing to my Lord with cymbals. Make melody to him psalm and praise. Exalt him, and call upon his name. For the Lord is the God that crushes battles. For in his armies in the midst of the people, he delivered me out of the hand of those who persecuted me. Asshur came out of the mountains from the north. He came with ten thousands of his army. Its multitude stopped the torrents. Their horsemen covered the hills. He said that he would burn up my borders, kill my young men with the sword, throw my nursing children to the ground, give my infants up as prey, and make my virgins a plunder. “The Almighty Lord brought them to nothing by the hand of a woman. For their mighty one did not fall by young men, neither did sons of the Titans strike him. Tall giants didn’t attack him, but Judith the daughter of Merari made him weak with the beauty of her countenance. “For she put off the apparel of her widowhood for the exaltation of those who were distressed in Israel. She anointed her face with ointment, bound her hair in a tiara, and took a linen garment to deceive him. Her sandal ravished his eye. Her beauty took his soul prisoner. The scimitar passed through his neck. “The Persians quaked at her daring. The Medes were daunted at her boldness. “Then my lowly ones shouted aloud. My weak ones were terrified and trembled for fear. They lifted up their voice, and they fled. The sons of ladies pierced them through, and wounded them as fugatives’ children. They perished by the battle of my Lord. “I will sing to my God a new song: O Lord, you are great and glorious, marvelous in strength, invincible. Let all your creation serve you; for you spoke, and they were made. You sent out your spirit, and it built them. There is no one who can resist your voice. For the mountains will be moved from their foundations with the waters, and the rocks will melt as wax at your presence: But you are yet merciful to those who fear you. For all sacrifice is little for a sweet savor, And all the fat is very little for a whole burnt offering to you; But he who fears the Lord is great continually. “Woe to the nations who rise up against my race! The Lord Almighty will take vengeance on them in the day of judgement, to put fire and worms in their flesh; and they will weep and feel their pain forever.” Now when they came to Jerusalem, they worshipped God. When the people were purified, they offered their whole burnt offerings, their free will offerings, and their gifts. Judith dedicated all Holofernes’ stuff, which the people had given her, and gave the canopy, which she had taken for herself out of his bedchamber, for a gift to the Lord. And the people continued feasting in Jerusalem before the sanctuary for three months, and Judith remained with them. But after these days, everyone departed to his own inheritance. Judith went away to Bethulia, and remained in her own possession, and was honorable in her time in all the land. Many desired her, and no man knew her all the days of her life, from the day that Manasses her husband died and was gathered to his people. She increased in greatness exceedingly; and she grew old in her husband’s house, to one hundred five years, and let her maid go free. Then she died in Bethulia. They buried her in the cave of her husband Manasses. The house of Israel mourned for her seven days. She distributed her goods before she died to all those who were nearest of kin to Manasses her husband, and to those who were nearest of her own kindred. There was no one that made the children of Israel afraid any more in the days of Judith, nor a long time after her death.

2 Corinteni 11

O, de aţi putea suferi puţintică nebunie din partea mea! Ei, haide, suferiţi-mă! Căci sînt gelos de voi cu o gelozie după voia lui Dumnezeu, pentrucă v'am logodit cu un bărbat, ca să vă înfăţişez înaintea lui Hristos ca pe o fecioară curată. Dar mă tem ca, după cum şarpele a amăgit pe Eva cu şiretlicul lui, tot aşa şi gîndurile voastre să nu se strice dela curăţia şi credincioşia care este faţă de Hristos. În adevăr, dacă vine cineva să vă propovăduiască un alt Isus pe care noi nu l-am propovăduit, sau dacă este vorba să primiţi un alt duh pe care nu l-aţi primit, sau o altă Evanghelie, pe care n'aţi primit -o, oh, cum îl îngăduiţi de bine! Dar socotesc că nici eu nu sînt cu nimic mai pe jos de apostolii aceştia ,,nespus de aleşi!`` Chiar dacă sînt un necioplit în vorbire, nu sînt însă şi în cunoştinţă; şi am arătat lucrul acesta printre voi, în tot felul şi în toate privinţele. Sau, am făcut un păcat, cînd m'am smerit pe mine însumi, ca să fiţi înălţaţi voi, şi v'am vestit fără plată Evanghelia lui Dumnezeu? Am despoiat alte Biserici, primind dela ele o plată, ca să vă pot sluji vouă. Şi cînd eram la voi, şi m'am găsit în nevoie, n'am fost sarcină nimănui; căci de nevoile mele au îngrijit fraţii, cînd veniseră din Macedonia. În toate m'am ferit, şi mă voi feri să vă îngreuiez cu ceva. Pe adevărul lui Hristos care este în mine, nimeni nu-mi va răpi această pricină de laudă în ţinuturile Ahaiei! Pentruce?... Pentrucă nu vă iubesc?... Ştie Dumnezeu! Dar lucrez şi voi lucra astfel, pentru ca să tai orice prilej celor ce caută un prilej, ca să poată fi găsiţi deopotrivă cu mine în lucrurile cu cari se laudă. Oamenii aceştia sînt nişte apostoli mincinoşi, nişte lucrători înşelători, cari se prefac în apostoli ai lui Hristos. Şi nu este de mirare, căci chiar Satana se preface într-un înger de lumină. Nu este mare lucru dar, dacă şi slujitorii lui se prefac în slujitori ai neprihănirii. Sfîrşitul lor va fi după faptele lor. Iarăş spun: să nu mă creadă nimeni nebun. Sau altmintrelea, suferiţi-mă măcar ca nebun, ca să mă laud şi eu puţintel. Ce spun în această îndrăsneală, ca să mă laud, nu spun după Domnul, ci ca şi cum aş spune din nebunie. De vreme ce mulţi se laudă după firea pămîntească, mă voi lăuda şi eu. Doar voi suferiţi cu plăcere pe nebuni, voi, cari sînteţi înţelepţi! Dacă vă robeşte cineva, dacă vă mănîncă cineva, dacă pune cineva mîna pe voi, dacă vă priveşte cineva de sus, dacă vă bate cineva peste obraz, suferiţi! Spre ruşinea mea o spun, că am fost slabi! Totuş, orice poate să pună înainte cineva-vorbesc în nebunie-pot pune şi eu înainte. Sînt ei Evrei? Şi eu sînt! -Sînt ei Israeliţi? Şi eu sînt! -Sînt ei sămînţă a lui Avraam? Şi eu sînt! - Sînt ei slujitori ai lui Hristos? -vorbesc ca un ieşit din minţi-eu sînt şi mai mult. În osteneli şi mai mult; în temniţe, şi mai mult; în lovituri, fără număr; de multe ori în primejdii de moarte! De cinci ori am căpătat dela Iudei patruzeci de lovituri fără una; de trei ori am fost bătut cu nuiele; odată am fost împroşcat cu pietre; de trei ori s -a sfărîmat corabia cu mine; o noapte şi o zi am fost în adîncul mării. Deseori am fost în călătorii, în primejdii pe rîuri, în primejdii din partea tîlharilor, în primejdii din partea celor din neamul meu, în primejdii din partea păgînilor, în primejdii în cetăţi, în primejdii în pustie, în primejdii pe mare, în primejdii între fraţii mincinoşi. În osteneli şi necazuri, în priveghiuiri adesea, în foame şi sete, în posturi adesea, în frig şi lipsă de îmbrăcăminte! Şi, pe lîngă lucrurile de afară, în fiecare zi mă apasă grija pentru toate Bisericile. Cine este slab, şi să nu fiu şi eu slab? Cine cade în păcat, şi eu să nu ard? Dacă e vorba să mă laud, mă voi lăuda numai cu lucrurile privitoare la slăbiciunea mea. Dumnezeu şi Tatăl Domnului nostru Isus Hristos, care este binecuvîntat în veci, ştie că nu mint!... În Damasc, dregătorul împăratului Areta păzea cetatea Damascenilor, ca să mă prindă. Dar am fost dat jos pe o fereastră, într'o coşniţă, prin zid, şi am scăpat din mînile lor.
