I will give thanks to you, O Lord, O King, And will praise you, O God my Saviour: I do give thanks to your name: For you were my protector and helper, And did deliver my body out of destruction, And out of the snare of a slanderous tongue, From lips that forge lies, And was my helper before those who stood by; And did deliver me, according to the abundance of your mercy, and greatness of your name, From the gnashings of teeth ready to devour, Out of the hand of such as sought my life, Out of the manifold afflictions which I had; From the choking of a fire on every side, And out of the midst of fire which I kindled not; Out of the depth of the belly of the grave, And from an unclean tongue, And from lying words, The slander of an unrighteous tongue to the king. My soul drew near even to death, And my life was near to the grave beneath. They compassed me on every side, And there was none to help me. I was looking for the succour of men, And it was not. And I remembered your mercy, O Lord, And your working which has been from everlasting, How you deliver those who wait for you, And save them out of the hand of the enemies. And I lifted up my supplication from the earth, And prayed for deliverance from death. I called upon the Lord, the Father of my Lord, That he would not forsake me in the days of affliction, In the time when there was no help against the proud. I will praise your name continually, And will sing praise with thanksgiving; And my supplication was heard: For you saved me from destruction, And delivered me from the evil time: Therefore will I give thanks and praise to you, And bless the name of the Lord. When I was yet young, Or ever I went abroad, I sought wisdom openly in my prayer. Before the temple I asked for her, And I will seek her out even to the end. From her flower as from the ripening grape my heart delighted in her: My foot trod in uprightness, From my youth I tracked her out. I bowed down my ear a little, and received her, And found for myself much instruction. I profited in her: To him that gives me wisdom I will give glory. For I purposed to practice her, And I was zealous for that which is good; And I shall never be put to shame. My soul has wrestled in her, And in my doing I was exact: I spread forth my hands to the heaven above, And bewailed my ignorances of her. I set my soul aright to her, And in pureness I found her. I got me a heart joined with her from the beginning: Therefore shall I not be forsaken. My inward part also was troubled to seek her: Therefore I have gotten a good possession. The Lord gave me a tongue for my reward; And I will praise him therewith. Draw near to me, you⌃ unlearned, And lodge in the house of instruction. Say, wherefore are you⌃ lacking in these things, And your souls are very thirsty? I opened my mouth, and spoke, Get her for yourselves without money. Put your neck under the yoke, And let your soul receive instruction: She is hard at hand to find. Behold with your eyes, How that I laboured but a little, And found for myself much rest. Get you instruction with a great sum of silver, And gain much gold by her. May your soul rejoice in his mercy, And may you⌃ not be put to shame in praising him. Work your work before the time comes, And in his time he will give you your reward.

Un oarecare Lazăr din Betania, satul Mariei şi al Martei, sora ei, era bolnav. - Maria era aceea care a uns pe Domnul cu mir, şi I -a şters picioarele cu părul ei, şi Lazăr cel bolnav era fratele ei. - Surorile au trimes la Isus să -i spună: ,,Doamne, iată că acela pe care -l iubeşti, este bolnav.`` Dar Isus, cînd a auzit vestea aceasta, a zis: ,,Boala aceasta nu este spre moarte, ci spre slava lui Dumnezeu, pentru ca Fiul lui Dumnezeu să fie proslăvit prin ea.`` Şi Isus iubea pe Marta, şi pe sora ei, şi pe Lazăr. Deci, cînd a auzit că Lazăr este bolnav, a mai zăbovit două zile în locul în care era; şi în urmă a zis ucenicilor: ,,Haidem să ne întoarcem în Iudea.`` ,,Învăţătorule``, I-au zis ucenicii, ,,acum de curînd căutau Iudeii să Te ucidă cu pietre, şi Te întorci în Iudea?`` Isus a răspuns: ,,Nu sînt douăsprezece ceasuri în zi? Dacă umblă cineva ziua nu se poticneşte, pentrucă vede lumina lumii acesteia; dar dacă umblă noaptea, se poticneşte, pentrucă n'are lumina în el.`` După aceste vorbe, le -a zis: ,,Lazăr, prietenul nostru, doarme: dar Mă duc să -l trezesc din somn.`` Ucenicii I-au zis: ,,Doamne, dacă doarme, are să se facă bine.`` Isus vorbise despre moartea lui, dar ei credeau că vorbeşte despre odihna căpătată prin somn. Atunci Isus le -a spus pe faţă: ,,Lazăr a murit.`` ,,Şi mă bucur că n'am fost acolo, pentru voi, ca să credeţi. Dar acum, haidem să mergem la el.`` Atunci Toma, zis Geamăn, a zis celorlalţi ucenici: ,,Haidem să mergem şi noi să murim cu El!`` Cînd a venit Isus, a aflat că Lazăr era de patru zile în mormînt. Şi, fiindcă Betania era aproape de Ierusalim, cam la cincisprezece stadii, Mulţi din Iudei veniseră la Marta şi Maria, ca să le mîngîie pentru moartea fratelui lor. Cînd a auzit Marta că vine Isus, I -a ieşit înainte; iar Maria şedea în casă. Marta a zis lui Isus: ,,Doamne, dacă ai fi fost aici, n'ar fi murit fratele meu! Dar şi acum, ştiu că orice vei cere dela Dumnezeu, Îţi va da Dumnezeu.`` Isus i -a zis: ,,Fratele tău va învia.`` ,,Ştiu``, I -a răspuns Marta, ,,că va învia la înviere, în ziua de apoi.`` Isus i -a zis: ,,Eu sînt învierea şi viaţa. Cine crede în Mine, chiar dacă ar fi murit, va trăi. Şi oricine trăieşte, şi crede în Mine, nu va muri niciodată. Crezi lucrul acesta?`` ,,Da, Doamne,`` I -a zis ea, ,,cred că Tu eşti Hristosul, Fiul lui Dumnezeu, care trebuia să vină în lume.`` Dupăce a spus aceste vorbe, s'a dus şi a chemat în taină pe soru-sa Maria, şi i -a zis: ,,A venit Învăţătorul şi te cheamă.`` Maria, cum a auzit, s'a sculat iute, şi s'a dus la El. Căci Isus nu intrase încă în sat, ci era tot în locul unde Îl întîmpinase Marta. Iudeii, cari erau cu Maria în casă şi o mîngîiau, cînd au văzut -o sculîndu-se iute şi ieşind afară, au mers după ea, căci ziceau: ,,Se duce la mormînt, ca să plîngă acolo.`` Maria, cînd a ajuns unde era Isus, şi L -a văzut, s'a aruncat la picioarele Lui, şi I -a zis: ,,Doamne, dacă ai fi fost aici, n'ar fi murit fratele meu.`` Isus, cînd a văzut -o plîngînd, pe ea şi pe Iudeii cari veniseră cu ea, S'a înfiorat în duhul Lui, şi S'a tulburat. Şi a zis: ,,Unde l-aţi pus?`` ,,Doamne,`` I-au răspuns ei, ,,vino şi vezi.`` Isus plîngea. Atunci Iudeii au zis: ,,Iată cît îl iubea de mult!`` Şi unii din ei au zis: ,,El, care a deschis ochii orbului, nu putea face ca nici omul acesta să nu moară?`` Isus S'a înfiorat din nou în Sine, şi S'a dus la mormînt. Mormîntul era o peşteră, la intrarea căreia era aşezată o piatră. ,,Daţi piatra la o parte,`` a zis Isus. Marta, sora mortului, I -a zis: ,,Doamne, miroase greu, căci este mort de patru zile.`` Isus i -a zis: ,,Nu ţi-am spus că, dacă vei crede, vei vedea slava lui Dumnezeu?`` Au luat dar piatra din locul unde zăcea mortul. Şi Isus a ridicat ochii în sus, şi a zis: ,,Tată, Îţi mulţămesc că M'ai ascultat. Ştiam că totdeauna Mă asculţi; dar vorbesc astfel pentru norodul care stă împrejur, ca să creadă că Tu M'ai trimes.`` Dupăce a zis aceste vorbe, a strigat cu glas tare: ,,Lazăre, vino afară!`` Şi mortul a ieşit cu mînile şi picioarele legate cu făşii de pînză, şi cu faţa înfăşurată cu un ştergar. Isus le -a zis: ,,Deslegaţi -l, şi lăsaţi -l să meargă.`` Mulţi din Iudeii, cari veniseră la Maria, cînd au văzut ce a făcut Isus, au crezut în El. Dar unii din ei s'au dus la Farisei, şi le-au spus ce făcuse Isus. Atunci preoţii cei mai de seamă şi Fariseii au adunat Soborul, şi au zis: ,,Ce vom face? Omul acesta face multe minuni. Dacă -L lăsăm aşa, toţi vor crede în El, şi vor veni Romanii şi ne vor nimici şi locul nostru şi neamul.`` Unul din ei, Caiafa, care era mare preot în anul acela, le -a zis: ,,Voi nu ştiţi nimic; oare nu vă gîndiţi că este în folosul vostru să moară un singur om pentru norod, şi să nu piară tot neamul?`` Dar lucrul acesta nu l -a spus de la el; ci, fiindcă era mare preot în anul acela, a proorocit că Isus avea să moară pentru neam. Şi nu numai pentru neamul acela, ci şi ca să adune într'un singur trup pe copiii lui Dumnezeu cei risipiţi. Din ziua aceea, au hotărît să -L omoare. De aceea Isus nu mai umbla pe faţă printre Iudei; ci a plecat de acolo în ţinutul de lîngă pustie, într'o cetate numită Efraim; şi a rămas acolo împreună cu ucenicii Săi. Paştele Iudeilor erau aproape. Şi mulţi oameni din ţinutul acela s'au suit la Ierusalim, înainte de Paşte, ca să se curăţească. Ei căutau pe Isus, şi vorbeau unii cu alţii în Templu: ,,Ce credeţi? N'are să vină la praznic?`` Iar preoţii cei mai de seamă şi Fariseii porunciseră că, dacă va şti cineva unde este, să le dea de ştire ca să -L prindă. Maria Îi toarnă mir pe picioare.

These are the words of the book, which Baruch the son of Nerias, the son of Maaseas, the son of Sedekias, the son of Asadias, the son of Helkias, wrote in Babylon, in the fifth year, and in the seventh day of the month, what time as the Chaldeans took Jerusalem, and burned it with fire. And Baruch did read the words of this book in the hearing of Jechonias the son of Joakim king of Judah, and in the hearing of all the people that came to hear the book, and in the hearing of the mighty men, and of the kings’ sons, and in the hearing of the elders, and in the hearing of all the people, from the least to the greatest, even of all those who lived at Babylon by the river Sud. And they wept, and fasted, and prayed before the Lord; they made also a collection of money according to every man’s power: and they sent it to Jerusalem to Joakim the high priest, the son of Helkias, the son of Salom, and to the priests, and to all the people which were found with him at Jerusalem, at the same time when he took the vessels of the house of the Lord, that had been carried out of the temple, to return them into the land of Judah, the tenth day of the month Sivan, namely, silver vessels, which Sedekias the son of Josias king of Judah had made, after that Nabuchodonosor king of Babylon had carried away Jechonias, and the princes, and the captives, and the mighty men, and the people of the land, from Jerusalem, and brought them to Babylon. And they said, Behold, we have sent you money; buy you therefore with the money burnt offerings, and sin offerings, and incense, and prepare an oblation, and offer upon the altar of the Lord our God; and pray for the life of Nabuchodonosor king of Babylon, and for the life of Baltasar his son, that their days may be as the days of heaven above the earth: and the Lord will give us strength, and lighten our eyes, and we shall live under the shadow of Nabuchodonosor king of Babylon, and under the shadow of Baltasar his son, and we shall serve them many days, and find favor in their sight. Pray for us also to the Lord our God, for we have sinned against the Lord our God; and to this day the wrath of the Lord and his indignation is not turned from us. And you⌃ shall read this book which we have sent to you, to make confession in the house of the Lord, upon the day of the feast and on the days of the solemn assembly. And you⌃ shall say, To the Lord our God belongs righteousness, but to us confusion of face, as at this day, to the men of Judah, and to the inhabitants of Jerusalem, and to our kings, and to our princes, and to our priests, and to our prophets, and to our fathers: for that we have sinned before the Lord, and disobeyed him, and have not hearkened to the voice of the Lord our God, to walk in the commandments of the Lord that he has set before us: since the day that the Lord brought our fathers out of the land of Egypt, to this present day, we have been disobedient to the Lord our God, and we have dealt unadvisedly in not hearkening to his voice. Wherefore the plagues clave to us, and the curse, which the Lord commanded Moses his servant to pronounce in the day that he brought our fathers out of the land of Egypt, to give us a land that flows with milk and honey, as at this day. Nevertheless we didn’t listen to the voice of the Lord our God, according to all the words of the prophets, whom he sent to us: but we walked every man in the imagination of his own wicked heart, to serve strange gods, and to do that which is evil in the sight of the Lord our God.

2 Timotei 2

Tu dar, copilul meu, întăreşte-te în harul care este în Hristos Isus. Şi ce-ai auzit dela mine, în faţa multor marturi, încredinţează la oameni de încredere, cari să fie în stare să înveţe şi pe alţii. Sufere împreună cu mine, ca un bun ostaş al lui Hristos. Niciun ostaş nu se încurcă cu treburile vieţii, dacă vrea să placă celui ce l -a scris la oaste. Şi cine luptă la jocuri, nu este încununat, dacă nu s'a luptat după rînduieli. Plugarul trebue să muncească înainte ca să strîngă rodurile. Înţelege ce-ţi spun; Domnul îţi va da pricepere în toate lucrurile. Adu-ţi aminte de Domnul Isus Hristos, din sămînţa lui David, înviat din morţi, după Evanghelia mea, pentru care sufăr pînă acolo că sînt legat ca un făcător de rele. Dar Cuvîntul lui Dumnezeu nu este legat. De aceea rabd totul pentru cei aleşi, pentruca şi ei să capete mîntuirea care este în Hristos Isus, împreună cu slava vecinică. Adevărat este cuvîntul acesta: dacă am murit împreună cu El, vom şi trăi împreună cu El. Dacă răbdăm, vom şi împărţi împreună cu El. Dacă ne lepădăm de El, şi El Se va lepăda de noi. Dacă sîntem necredincioşi, totuş El rămîne credincios, căci nu Se poate tăgădui singur. Adu-le aminte de aceste lucruri, şi roagă -i fierbinte înaintea lui Dumnezeu, să se ferească de certurile de cuvinte, cari nu duc la alt folos decît la pieirea celor ce le ascultă. Caută să te înfăţişezi înaintea lui Dumnezeu ca un om încercat, ca un lucrător care n'are de ce să -i fie ruşine, şi care împarte drept Cuvîntul adevărului. Fereşte-te de vorbăriile goale şi lumeşti; căci cei ce le ţin, vor înainta tot mai mult în necinstirea lui Dumnezeu. Şi cuvîntul lor va roade ca gangrena. Din numărul acestora sînt Imeneu şi Filet, cari s'au abătut dela adevăr. Ei zic că a şi venit învierea, şi răstoarnă credinţa unora. Totuş temelia tare a lui Dumnezeu stă nezguduită, avînd pecetea aceasta: ,,Domnul cunoaşte pe ceice sînt ai Lui``; şi: ,,Oricine rosteşte Numele Domnului, să se depărteze de fărădelege!`` Într'o casă mare nu sînt numai vase de aur şi de argint, ci şi de lemn şi de pămînt. Unele sînt pentru o întrebuinţare de cinste, iar altele pentru o întrebuinţare de ocară. Deci dacă cineva se curăţeşte de acestea, va fi un vas de cinste, sfinţit, folositor stăpînului său, destoinic pentru orice lucrare bună. Fugi de poftele tinereţii, şi urmăreşte neprihănirea, credinţa, dragostea, pacea, împreună cu cei ce cheamă pe Domnul dintr'o inimă curată. Fereşte-te de întrebările nebune şi nefolositoare, căci ştii că dau naştere la certuri. Şi robul Domnului nu trebuie să se certe; ci să fie blînd cu toţi, în stare să înveţe pe toţi, plin de îngăduinţă răbdătoare, să îndrepte cu blîndeţă pe potrivnici, în nădejdea că Dumnezeu le va da pocăinţa, ca să ajungă la cunoştinţa adevărului; şi, venindu-şi în fire, să se desprindă din cursa diavolului, de care au fost prinşi ca să -i facă voia.
