Life
Anthony of Egypt is considered the father of Christian monasticism. After hearing the Gospel call to sell all he owned, he gave away his wealth and withdrew to the desert, living as a hermit for decades amid famous temptations. His example drew many followers and inspired the monastic movement. Patron of animals and skin diseases, he is honored on January 17.
