Life
A Bohemian immigrant and Redemptorist priest, John Neumann became the fourth Bishop of Philadelphia and the first American bishop to be canonized. Fluent in several languages to serve immigrants, he established the first diocesan Catholic school system and promoted the Forty Hours eucharistic devotion, and is honored as a patron of Catholic education.
