Life
Catherine of Alexandria is venerated as a virgin martyr of the early fourth century in Roman Egypt. According to tradition, the learned young Christian confounded fifty pagan philosophers summoned to refute her, survived torture on a spiked wheel, remembered as the Catherine wheel, and was beheaded. She is honored as a patron of philosophers and students.
