Life
Martin of Tours (c. 316–397) was a Roman soldier who, meeting a shivering beggar, cut his military cloak in two to share it—later seeing Christ in a dream wearing the half he gave away. He left the army, became Bishop of Tours, and evangelized rural Gaul. One of the first non-martyrs venerated as a saint, this patron of soldiers and beggars is honored on November 11.
