Life
Martin de Porres (1579-1639) was a Dominican lay brother of mixed African and Spanish descent in Lima, Peru. Despite the racial prejudice of colonial society, his humility, healing gifts, and tireless charity toward the poor and the sick made him beloved by all classes. Canonized in 1962, he is a patron of mixed-race people, barbers, and social justice.
