Gertrude the Great (1256-1302) was a Benedictine nun of the monastery of Helfta in Saxony and one of the great mystics of the medieval Church. Her visions and writings, above all the Herald of Divine Love, gave early and profound expression to devotion to the Sacred Heart of Jesus and have deeply influenced Catholic spirituality ever since.
