The Assumption celebrates the dogma that the Blessed Virgin Mary, at the end of her earthly life, was taken up body and soul into heavenly glory. Among the oldest Marian feasts, it was kept in the East as the Dormition by the sixth century, and the dogma was solemnly defined by Pope Pius XII in 1950. It is a solemnity and, in many countries, a holy day of obligation.
