Life

One of the seven deacons of Rome, Lawrence was martyred under Emperor Valerian in 258. Ordered to surrender the Church's treasures, he gathered the poor and declared them its true riches. Tradition holds he was roasted on a gridiron, making him patron of cooks as well as the poor. His August 10 feast honors a deacon whose charity outshone his torturers.
