Life
This memorial commemorates the martyrdom of Saint John the Baptist, the forerunner of Christ, who was beheaded by order of Herod Antipas. As the Gospels recount, John had rebuked Herod for unlawfully taking Herodias, his brother's wife; at a banquet her daughter's dance won the promise that led to his execution. He is honored as the prophet who bore witness to the truth even unto death.
