Life
Angela Merici (1474-1540) was born at Desenzano on Lake Garda in northern Italy. A Franciscan tertiary devoted to teaching poor girls, in 1535 at Brescia she founded the Company of Saint Ursula, the Ursulines, the first teaching order of women in the Church, dedicated to the education of girls. Canonized in 1807, she is a patron of the education of women.
