Life
Ansgar (801-865) was a Benedictine monk of Corbie in France who undertook pioneering missions to Denmark and Sweden in the ninth century. He became the first Archbishop of Hamburg, later Hamburg-Bremen, and used the see as a base for evangelizing northern Europe. Honored as the Apostle of the North, he is venerated as a patron of Scandinavia.
