Life
A disciple of Saint John the Apostle, Polycarp served as Bishop of Smyrna and stands among the Apostolic Fathers who linked the early Church to the age of the apostles. Refusing to renounce Christ, he was martyred by burning around 155 at the age of eighty-six. The account of his death is the earliest detailed record of a Christian martyrdom, remembered each February 23.
