Life

Born in North Africa in 354, Augustine left a restless, worldly youth for baptism under Saint Ambrose, becoming Bishop of Hippo and a Doctor of the Church. His Confessions and City of God rank among the most influential works in Western thought, shaping Christian doctrine for centuries. Patron of theologians and brewers, he died in 430; his feast is August 28.
