Life

Born near Dijon in 1090, Bernard entered the young Cistercian order and founded the abbey of Clairvaux, becoming the most influential churchman of the twelfth century. A Doctor of the Church, his mystical writings on divine love and devotion to Mary earned him the title Mellifluous Doctor. Patron of beekeepers, he died in 1153 and is honored on August 20.
