Life

Callistus I was a former slave who rose to become Bishop of Rome in the early third century. As a deacon he oversaw the Christian cemetery on the Appian Way that still bears his name. As pope he showed a merciful pastoral spirit, readmitting repentant sinners to communion despite fierce criticism. He is venerated as a martyr.
