Francis of Assisi, son of a wealthy cloth merchant, renounced his inheritance to embrace radical poverty and founded the Franciscan Order. He rebuilt churches, preached to all creation, received the stigmata, and composed the Canticle of the Sun. Among the most beloved saints in Christianity, he is patron of animals and ecology, honored October 4.
