Life

Ignatius was the third Bishop of Antioch and a disciple of the Apostle John. Condemned under the emperor Trajan, he was taken to Rome and martyred around 108 by being thrown to wild beasts in the arena. The seven letters he wrote en route give crucial early testimony to Church structure, unity, and the Eucharist. This Apostolic Father is honored on October 17.
