Charles Lwanga and his companions were young pages at the court of King Mwanga of Buganda who were burned alive at Namugongo in 1886 for their Catholic faith and their refusal to submit to the king's demands. Canonized by Paul VI in 1964, these Ugandan martyrs are patrons of African Catholic youth, honored together on June 3.
