Life
Denis was the first Bishop of Paris, sent from Rome in the third century to evangelize Gaul. Together with the priest Rusticus and the deacon Eleutherius, he was martyred during the persecution of Valerian, according to tradition on the hill later called Montmartre. He is venerated as a patron saint of France and one of the most celebrated early martyrs of Gaul.
