Life

A New York widow and convert from Episcopalianism, Elizabeth Ann Seton was the first native-born American to be canonized. Mother of five, she founded the Sisters of Charity, the first American religious community for women, and established the parochial school system in the United States, earning her patronage of Catholic schools.
