Life
Ephrem the Syrian was a fourth-century deacon of Nisibis and later Edessa, the greatest poet-theologian of the Syriac tradition, honored as the Harp of the Holy Spirit. He composed hundreds of hymns and biblical commentaries that taught doctrine through vivid imagery and song. He died in 373 while ministering to victims of famine and plague, and in 1920 he was declared a Doctor of the Church.
