Life
Fabian was Bishop of Rome from 236 to 250, elected, according to Eusebius, after a dove settled upon his head. During fourteen years of relative peace he organized the Roman Church into seven deaconries for the care of the poor. He was among the first victims of the persecution of Emperor Decius, dying a martyr in 250, and was buried in the catacomb of Callixtus.
