Life

Jane Frances de Chantal (1572-1641) was a French baroness and mother who, after her husband's death in a hunting accident, came under the spiritual direction of Saint Francis de Sales. Together they founded the Order of the Visitation of Holy Mary at Annecy in 1610, welcoming women unsuited to harsher orders. Balancing family duties with deep contemplative life, she was canonized in 1767.
