Life
Joseph Calasanz (1557-1648) was a Spanish priest from Aragon who devoted his life to educating poor children. In Rome in 1597 he opened Europe's first free public school, and he founded the Piarists, the first religious order dedicated to free education for the young. Canonized in 1767, he was later named patron of Christian schools by Pope Pius XII.
