Life
Josephine Bakhita (c. 1869-1947) was born in the Darfur region of Sudan and kidnapped into slavery as a child, enduring years of brutal treatment. Taken to Italy, she gained her freedom, was baptized, and entered the Canossian Sisters, serving humbly for decades in Schio. Canonized by Pope John Paul II in 2000, she is a symbol of hope for survivors of human trafficking.
