Life
Louis IX (1214-1270) reigned as King of France from 1226 and was renowned for his justice, charity, and personal holiness. He built the Sainte-Chapelle in Paris to house the relic of the Crown of Thorns, founded hospitals, cared for the poor, and led two crusades, dying near Tunis in 1270. Canonized in 1297, he is the only French king to be declared a saint and is a patron of France.
