Life
A Polish Franciscan friar and missionary, Maximilian Kolbe was imprisoned at Auschwitz, where he volunteered to die in place of a stranger condemned to starvation. He comforted his fellow captives with prayer until he was killed by lethal injection in 1941. Canonized as a martyr of charity, he is patron of drug addicts and prisoners; his memorial is August 14.
