Life
A devout Christian of North Africa, Monica was the mother of Saint Augustine, whose wayward youth she mourned for years with persistent prayer and tears. Her hope was rewarded when he embraced the faith shortly before her death in 387. Model of patient maternal devotion, she is patron of mothers and wives, and her August 27 memorial fittingly precedes her son's.
