Life

Norbert of Xanten was a twelfth-century German nobleman whose brush with death prompted a dramatic conversion from a worldly court life. Ordained a priest, he became an itinerant preacher and in 1120 founded the Premonstratensian Order (Norbertines) at Premontre in France. As Archbishop of Magdeburg he worked for reform of the clergy and defended the Church's teaching on the Eucharist. He died in 1134.
