Paul of the Cross (1694-1775) was an Italian mystic who founded the Congregation of the Passion, known as the Passionists, a religious order devoted to meditating on and preaching about the Passion of Christ. A powerful preacher of missions across Italy, he was renowned for his austerity, mystical prayer, and compassion for sinners. He was canonized in 1867.
