Life

Peter Damian (1007-1072) was born at Ravenna and became a Benedictine monk and later prior of the hermitage of Fonte Avellana. Named cardinal bishop of Ostia, he championed monastic and clerical reform in the eleventh century, and his writings on asceticism and Church discipline profoundly influenced the Gregorian Reform. He was declared a Doctor of the Church in 1828.
