Life

Born Giuseppe Sarto to a poor Italian family in 1835, Pius X rose from village priest to pope in 1903. He promoted early and frequent Communion, lowered the age for a child's First Communion, reformed the liturgy and sacred music, and codified canon law. His motto was 'to restore all things in Christ.' Patron of First Communicants, he is kept on August 21.
