Life
Rose of Lima (1586-1617) was a Dominican tertiary and the first person born in the Americas to be canonized. Living at home in Lima, Peru, she embraced severe penance and intense mystical prayer while supporting her family with needlework and caring for the poor and sick of the city. Canonized in 1671, she is the patroness of Latin America and the Philippines.
