Life
Sebastian was a Roman soldier, said to have come from Narbonne in Gaul, who served in the imperial army while secretly aiding persecuted Christians. When his faith was discovered, Emperor Diocletian ordered him shot with arrows; surviving, he confronted the emperor and was beaten to death around 288. He is a patron of soldiers and athletes and was long invoked against the plague.
