Life

Sixtus II became pope in 257 and was martyred the following year during the persecution of the emperor Valerian. He was seized while celebrating the liturgy in the catacombs of Rome and put to death in 258 together with several of his deacons; the deacon Lawrence followed him in martyrdom days later. Sixtus is among the martyrs named in the Roman Canon of the Mass.
