Stephen (c. 975-1038) was the first King of Hungary, crowned around the year 1000. He established Christianity as the religion of his realm, founded dioceses and monasteries, organized the Church throughout Hungary, and laid the foundations of the Hungarian state. Renowned for his justice and generosity to the poor, he was canonized in 1083 and is the patron saint of Hungary.
