Life
Born Edith Stein in Breslau in 1891 to a Jewish family, Teresa Benedicta of the Cross was a brilliant philosopher and assistant to Edmund Husserl before converting to Catholicism in 1922. She entered the Carmel of Cologne in 1933 and was later moved to the Netherlands for safety, but was arrested by the Nazis and killed at Auschwitz in 1942. Canonized in 1998, she is a co-patroness of Europe.
