Close friends from their student days in Athens, Basil the Great and Gregory Nazianzen were Cappadocian Fathers and Doctors of the Church. Basil, Bishop of Caesarea, shaped Eastern monasticism and charity; Gregory, Bishop of Constantinople, was acclaimed 'the Theologian.' Together they defended Trinitarian orthodoxy against Arianism in the fourth century, and share this January 2 memorial.
