John de Brébeuf, Isaac Jogues, and six fellow Jesuit missionaries were tortured and killed between 1642 and 1649 while evangelizing the Huron and Iroquois peoples of New France. Known as the North American Martyrs, they gave their lives for the faith on the frontier and are venerated as patrons of Canada, honored together on October 19.
