Life
John Fisher, Bishop of Rochester and a renowned scholar, and Thomas More, lawyer, author of Utopia, and Lord Chancellor of England, were beheaded in 1535 for refusing to accept Henry VIII's claim to supremacy over the Church in England. Fisher was named a cardinal shortly before his death. Both were canonized in 1935, and in 2000 John Paul II declared More the patron of statesmen and politicians.
