Pope Pontian and the priest Hippolytus, a learned theologian and once his rival, were both deported to the mines of Sardinia during the persecution of Emperor Maximinus Thrax in 235. Reconciled in their shared exile, they died from the harsh conditions and are venerated together as martyrs, their bodies later returned to Rome for burial.
