This feast celebrates the cross of Christ as the instrument of salvation and the sign of his victory over sin and death. It commemorates the finding of the True Cross by Saint Helena in Jerusalem, the dedication of the basilica of the Holy Sepulchre in 335, and the recovery of the relic from the Persians by the Byzantine emperor Heraclius in the seventh century.
