This memorial contemplates the suffering of the Blessed Virgin Mary throughout her life, traditionally counted as seven sorrows from Simeon's prophecy to the burial of Jesus. Celebrated the day after the Exaltation of the Holy Cross, the devotion was spread especially by the Servite Order and honors Mary standing faithfully at the foot of the cross.
