Life
A Roman-born monk who became pope in 590, Gregory the Great was one of the four great Latin Doctors of the Church. He reformed the liturgy, lent his name to Gregorian chant, sent missionaries to convert England, and wrote enduring works on pastoral care and theology. Patron of musicians and teachers, he died in 604 and is remembered on September 3.
