Life
Matthew was a tax collector in Galilee who left his post at Jesus' call to become one of the Twelve Apostles. Tradition names him author of the first Gospel, which presents Jesus as the fulfillment of Old Testament prophecy for a Jewish audience. An apostle and evangelist, he is patron of accountants and tax collectors, celebrated September 21.
