Optional Memorial

Most Holy Name of the Blessed Virgin Mary

Feast day
September 12

Life

This optional memorial honors the holy name of Mary, inviting the faithful to call upon the Mother of God with confidence and devotion. Originating in Spain in the sixteenth century, the feast was extended to the universal Church by Pope Innocent XI in thanksgiving for the victory at Vienna in 1683, and it was restored to the Roman calendar by Pope John Paul II in 2002.
