Life
Padre Pio was an Italian Capuchin friar of Pietrelcina who bore the visible stigmata for fifty years. Renowned for gifts of healing, bilocation, and reading souls, he spent long hours hearing confessions and founded a hospital for the suffering. He died in 1968, was canonized in 2002, and is honored September 23 as patron of civil defense volunteers.
